Re: Glassjaw.net: The Justin Beck Interview (June 2008)
does anyone else think it's badass that Manny's using his fingers instead of a pick?
i thought it was rad because i'm a bass player but i'm guessing no one else cares.

yeah I always liked that too, I much prefer using fingers over a pick/plectrum but sometimes they do get a better sound
dude 99% of the bassists i play with finger. from what i know its just based on choice but im sure each one has its pros and cons... but for funkadelic sex jazz, fingers are best.. finger those strings babay yeeeeah

yeah, usually a pick sounds better in some of the more chaotic parts. i know Manny can slap too so i think he should do that in some of those parts. i know the bass is already recorded but i think it'd be cool if he did it live

I'm a bass player. When I started playing I used a pick (my heroes were Justin Chancellor [Tool], Greg Edwards [Failure] and Danny Lohner [Nine Inch Nails/A Perfect Circle]) and they all used picks. I really regret starting with a pick. At this point I can play with my fingers accurately, but not anywhere near as fast as I can with a pick. You get a very, very different sound. I think fingers sound better when you're doing something that requires a warm tone. Picks have their place though, brighter parts sound good with a pick. Also, there's a lot you can do with a pick. If you hit one way it just adds definition to the note, but you can also hit in a way that sounds more.. scratchy. Of course fingering is pretty limitless too. And of course, everything depends on how powerful your pickup is. When I was playing with a fender there wasn't a massively noticable difference between fingers and pick; but I switched to an Ernie Ball and now the difference is like night and day. The pick is so, so noticable with the humbucker..

is it my impression or Beck's a little disgruntled at the interview?
or maybe i would say, like if he knows that he's making an interview to a true fan and has this attitude like he doesn't care too much (but he really is)...
i dunno, i mean, don't get me wrong, questions are very good and smart, but he answers like if he was talking to someone that has been grabbing his
ball sac the entire set asking for a guitar pick haha!
well, that's my impression.
and anyway i'm very impacient for listen more new songs.
and i think chingatumadre is mexican.
chingatumadre: chingas a tu madre please?
once i knew a guy, mexican, that adored hitler and nazism and swastikas and all that shit haha
i'm not racist ok? i'm from mexico too, but the guy was a total joke.
